Enhancing Vitamin D Adherence: A Multifaceted Intervention Approach

Promoting daily supplement persistence through tactile feedback loops and strategic digital interventions.

Challenge

Inadequate levels of vitamin D pose significant health risks, including depression and increased susceptibility to various diseases. However, ensuring consistent intake of vitamin D supplements presents a substantial challenge due to poor long-term medication adherence and persistence.

Strategy & Interventions

Collaborating with healthcare professionals, I spearheaded an initiative aimed at promoting daily consumption of vitamin D through a combination of physical and digital interventions:

1. Tactile Physical Engagement

Patients were provided with aesthetically appealing scratch cards featuring 30 concealed panels, representing each day of the month. As patients consumed their daily vitamin D supplement, they scratched off a panel to unveil hidden messages (such as word puzzles), adding a daily element of gamification and interactive feedback to the routine.

2. Timed Digital Nudges

After the first week, personalized text messages were introduced at strategic intervals. These messages served a dual purpose: educating patients on the physiological benefits of consistent vitamin D consumption and acting as timely behavioral reminders.

Tailored Message Trigger:
“After 7 days of consistent vitamin D intake, you should be feeling...”

Outcome & Health Impact

95% Sustained Adherence While adherence rates initially dipped after the first week, the incorporation of supplementary text nudges and scratch-card interactions resulted in 95% of participants maintaining consistent adherence at the 3-month mark.
Normalized Clinical Biomarkers Laboratory assessments confirmed normalized blood levels of vitamin D across the cohort, demonstrating the clinical efficacy of combining physical tracking with behavioral nudges.
